The Manhattan Beach Studios with over 500,000 square feet of sound stages, offices and support facilities opened in recent years with many TV programs filmed there. The City of Manhattan Beach covers about 4 square miles and has about 1225 acres of residential area, occupied by about 34,000 permanent residents. The population is diverse with many young professionals, many retired aerospace employees in the older brackets, and many families taking advantage of the beach lifestyle, and raising their children in a safe and sound environment.
Many of the older homes built prior to and during the 50s still exist in traditional older neighborhoods and sitting on tree lined streets that are clean and well maintained. Older cottages dating back to the pre WWII era are mixed in with some older houses in some of the neighborhoods, (more so on the 'walk streets'), that have been remodeled and are fast sellers on the local real estate market. Most of these older homes have been upgraded to larger homes over the years and the prices are upper end, and these properties are always in high demand.
Down closer to the beach, however, the real estate landscape in Manhattan Beach changes considerably with the many new multi-million dollar homes replacing the old beach homes that were here for decades. When an older beachfront home is torn down, there becomes a bidding war on the vacant lot with the selling price, many times ending up way over the original asking price for the lot. One thing Manhattan Beach does not have, nor does any of the beach cities close by, and that is raw land. Land and build-able lots, especially lots along the beachfront, are like gold here.
